Receivership for Amistad Schooner Charity
The Associate Press reports (republished on SFGate) that a Connecticut Judge has appointed a receiver to take over the charity that controls the Amistad schooner that is the state’s official flagship. According to the article, the charity – Amistad America Inc. – has incurred a significant amount of debt and has lost its tax-exempt status because of a failure to file Forms 990 for three years in a row. The article further reports that current charity officials released a statement supporting the receivership, which will be overseen by New Haven lawyer Katharine Sacks at the request of Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen.
