The much-anticipated “steal a charity” (Elon Musk’s accusation) trial against Sam Altman, OpenAI, Microsoft, and various other entities ended earlier this month without the jury reaching the merits of any of Musk’s claims. Instead, the jury concluded unanimously that Musk had waited too long to bring them. Based on that finding, the judge dismissed all of those claims. Musk and his lawyers vowed to appeal the decision, but given the fact-based nature of the resolution it may be difficult to convince a federal appellate court to reverse it. Of course, even if the appeal is unsuccessful the debate over how OpenAI’s nonprofit origins should affect its future development will continue. Verdict Coverage: BBC; NPR.
