Yesterday, Reuters reported that OpenAI, which has restructured itself likely in a bid to go public, has named leadership and created goals for the controlling nonprofit organization.
Robert Kaiden, formerly of Deloitte, Twitter, and something called Inspirato (apparently a luxury vacation club), has been named CFO of the OpenAI nonprofit. It’ll be interesting to see how he does: little in his resume suggests familiarity with nonprofits, though Inspirato apparently partners with charities for fundraising auctions.
On top of that, OpenAI has announced that it will “invest” at least $1 billion in generative-AI related stuff over the next year. And I’m not entirely sure what it means by “invest”: it could mean that it will make grants to organizations involved in “life sciences and medical research and workforce and community programs.” Or it could mean that it will make equity investments in those organizations.
Whatever happens, there is now a restructured nonprofit OpenAI, and it will be interesting to see how it implements its nonprofit mission.
