Nonprofit and Philanthropy Law Session at AALS

January 7, 2026

Greetings from New Orleans, where the AALS Annual Meeting is taking place.

For those of us in attendance, we’re in for a treat tomorrow afternoon, when the Nonprofit and Philanthropy Law’s main panel will take place (from 2:35 PM – 3:50 PM CT).  The panel session will focus on the following:

“Prior to the rise of general incorporation statutes during the early 1800s, promoters had to seek bespoke charters from the government to use the corporate form. As a result, corporations often served the public good. General incorporation statutes created a schism between non-profit and for profit corporations that exists to this day. This panel seeks to explore the extent of that gap and how nonprofit and for profit corporate law interact and inform each other. This discussion is especially timely because of the rise of movements encouraging conscious capitalism and corporate social responsibility.”

The panelists include Atinuke (Tinu) Adediran (Fordham University School of Law), Cathy Hwang (University of Virginia School of Law) , and Andrew Abraham Schwartz (University of Colorado Law School).

I hope to see you there.
