will discuss recent initiatives by state legislatures and
attorneys general to oversee nonprofit activities and the
troubling trend toward state authoritarianism restricting
nonprofit service and advocacy.

1:15 PM What Does the Freedom of Association Mean
for Nonprofits? As Alexis de Tocqueville once wrote, “If
men are to remain civilized or to become so, the art of
associating must be developed and perfected among them
in the same ratio as the equality of conditions increases.”
This panel will discuss the history and trajectory of the
constitutionally protected freedom of association, its
impact on nonprofits, and what the future may hold.
