Maine to Study Impact of Nonprofit Exemption from Sales, Use, and Service Tax
Lies, damned lies, and statistics. Which means we can pretty much get data to support whatever point we wanna make. And when legislatures mandate that something be studied, they pretty much already know the point the study is designed to help them make. Or am I being too cynical? Maybe, but if I were living in Maine, I might advise the Maine Association of Nonprofits to start trying to “influence” a newly mandated study regarding nonprofit tax exemptions. It wouldn’t be “lobbying” I don’t think. It would be “self-defense.” The only reason legislatures study or hold hearings about something is when somebody is trying to generate support for one thing or another regarding that something. Up near Presque Isle, where my rolling stone brother used to live, Maine has determined to study the impact of sales, use and service tax exemption for nonprofits. Which means somebody is fixing try to repeal those and maybe eventually other exemptions. I am just saying:
