The Changing Role of Museum Directors
The New York Times recently published an article on how running a museum is changing. Once the domain of the slightly-aloof art history Ph.D. who could also raise money, today’s museums face labor unrest, the realization that some portion of their collections are looted, activist pressure, and internal pressure. They need to diversify their collections, their workforces, and their managers.
How will this shift from aesthetic managers to manager-managers play out? It’s probably too early to know, but it will be an interesting progression to follow over the next months and years.
