Dutch global pro bono law firm to represent southern Sudan Before The Hague Arbitration Tribunal

The Public International Law and Policy Group (PIPLG) will represent the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), according to a press release issued July 4, 2008. The SPLM are engaged in a dispute with the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) over the oil-rich region of Abyei. A border has been established by an international commission but the ruling party in Khartoum have not recognized their findings. While a road map for peace was outlined last month, it is hoped that the arbitration hearing in The Hague will settle the dispute.

According to the roadmap for the implementation of the Abyei protocol the international arbitration tribunal is supposed to settle the NCP-SPLM dispute over the finding of the Abyei Boundaries Commission.

The road map also calls for The Hague tribunal to decide whether or not the Abyei boundary commission exceeded its mandate in its 2005 ruling.

The PIPLG are a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands, where they operate as a global pro bono law firm. The text of the article may be read here.
